ASD Device Closure

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) device closure is a minimally invasive procedure used to close a suitable opening between the upper chambers of the heart. An ASD can allow blood to pass abnormally between the atria, and closure may be considered when the defect has a significant clinical effect.

During device closure, a specialised catheter is introduced through the vascular system and guided to the heart. A closure device is then positioned across the ASD to cover the opening. The device is designed to remain in position while the surrounding heart tissue grows around it over time.

Not every ASD is suitable for catheter-based closure. Detailed cardiac imaging is used to evaluate the size, location and characteristics of the defect and surrounding structures. The final treatment approach is selected according to the individual anatomical and clinical findings.
