TAVI – Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), also known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat selected patients with significant aortic valve disease. It provides an alternative to conventional surgical valve replacement in appropriate cases.

During the procedure, a replacement valve mounted on a specialised delivery system is guided through a blood vessel to the heart. The new valve is positioned within the diseased aortic valve and deployed to improve blood flow from the heart into the aorta.

Detailed assessment is required before TAVI, including evaluation of the aortic valve, heart function, blood vessels and overall clinical condition. Imaging studies are an important part of procedural planning and help determine the appropriate valve size, access route and treatment strategy.
