ASD Device Closure

Specialised expertise in the minimally invasive closure of suitable Atrial Septal Defects using a closure device.

ASD Device Closure

An Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is an opening in the wall between the heart's two upper chambers. Depending on the size, location and physiological effect of the defect, closure may be recommended to prevent problems associated with abnormal blood flow between the chambers.

Device closure is a minimally invasive treatment option for appropriately selected ASDs. During the procedure, a specialised closure device is delivered through a catheter and positioned across the defect. Once correctly positioned, the device covers the opening and supports closure of the abnormal communication between the chambers.

Detailed imaging is important for evaluating the defect and determining whether device closure is suitable. The size and type of the ASD, surrounding cardiac structures and other clinical factors are considered before the procedure is planned.
